In addition to the regulations of vhm events, there are additional legislation in Belgium for exhibiting and trading animals.

These rules must be strictly followed as fines and sanctions can be imposed by the government of Belgium on the owner / seller of the animals. The organization can also refuse you at the event.

For Belgium, a health declaration is not yet necessary.

There has been a positive list for terrarium animals since 2019. Naturally, international rules such as CITES also apply. I do advise you to keep an eye on the government's website.

When registering an event in Belgium, you are deemed to know the legislation or have taken note of the legislation in Belgium (see elsewhere on this page)

Some rules:

  • Only reptiles and mammals appearing on the POSITIVE LISTS may be traded, exhibited and sold.
    CITES animals (and PARTS thereof) may only be sold if with TRANSFER FORM (KEEP REGISTER) or WITH YELLOW CITES PAPERS and CHIPPED (Paper must be present on site)
    Native amphibians, reptiles, insects and mammals that are protected by law may not be displayed or offered; (Bern Convention)-(Species Decree 2009)
    Only animals that appear on the positive list may be offered; Ban on invasive exotics (including plants)
    When offering plants, the legislation must also be complied with; Ban on invasive exotics (including plants)
    Native reptiles and amphibians may only be exhibited, traded or sold with PROOF OF OFFPRODUCTION
    Offering, exchanging and the like may only take place in the hall of the building and not elsewhere such as the parking lot;
    The animals may only be offered in the appropriate boxes or terrariums with sufficient freedom of movement and provided with hiding and climbing options and moisture; everything according to need (Animal Welfare Act);
    Due to the danger of escape, certain types of spiders and insects may not be offered in "cricket boxes", but in sturdier boxes. Some species are: Pterinchilus murinus, Brachypelma albopilosa, Cithariscus crayshawi, Lasiodora parahybana, Pamphobeteus ferox, Pterinochilus vorax, Theraphosa leblondi & Xenesthis monstrosa;
    The offering of dangerous or venomous animals is prohibited including venomous snakes, crocodiles, scorpions & certain potentially venomous or very biting spiders: such as the Loxosceles reclusa; PROHIBITION OF TOXIC ANIMALS
    The seller is obliged to inform the buyer about the purchased animals; (European/Belgian legislation, possible dangers, housing, food and size of the adult animals)
    Offering or showing sick or weakened animals is NOT allowed and they can be removed by the organization; The price must be stated and whether it is per animal or multiple copies;
    The scientific name and Dutch name, status, CITES status and possibly gender must be stated when the animals are sold (offered);
    ALL ANIMALS MUST MENTION THEIR SCIENTIFIC NAME / SEX / CITES / PRICE
    SUFFICIENT and SPECIFIC WATER, CLIMBING OPPORTUNITIES, HUMIDITY, etc.
    ANIMALS MAY NOT AGITEN EACH OTHER
    The organization cannot be held liable for damage resulting from inspection or seizure;
    The organization cannot be held liable for damage caused by third parties;
    The organization cannot be held liable for force majeure;
    The Belgian local and federal government has the right to carry out unannounced checks on the event;

    In Belgium, a smoking ban has been in force since 1 January 2007. The smoking ban applies in all halls, corridors, offices, sanitary installations, drinks & eateries in Belgium and applies to organisers, suppliers, exhibitors and visitors.
    DOGS IN PRINCIPLE NOT ALLOWED IN THE ROOM (only guide dogs) But not strictly supervised)
    POSSIBLE CONTROL and INSPECTION by POLICE, GOVERNMENT INSPECTORS, etc. DURING THE FAIR.
